Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, though separated, continue to co-parent their son Azad Rao Khan. Kiran Rao, the director of Laapataa Ladies, described co-parenting as a bit "tricky" due to Aamir's busy schedule. She shared that she did the primary parenting even when they were together. However, she acknowledged that the superstar has become more involved now, even though he doesn't want to know anything about Azad's school.
Speaking on Kareena Kapoor's chat show What Women Want, Kiran explained, "It’s tricky. He is a very busy father. Honestly, even when we were married, I was doing a lot of the actual primary parenting. Once we got separated and then divorced, I think Aamir also sort of realised how much of that he will have to factor into his life because when you are living together in the same house, it somehow gets managed.”
Kiran also mentioned that she can now "relax and leave Azad" with Aamir as their co-parenting has become "smoother" with Aamir being "much more involved and conscious." She said, "But, in order to make time for Azad, it became much more of a conscious decision more recently."
"Only Aamir knows nothing about school. I think it is a majority of a dad's problem. They are like school ka matt bolna (Don't ask me about school). I will do whatever else," she shared.
Reflecting on her experience as a single parent, Kiran stated that it was not much of a challenge since "Azad is a good kid", adding, "Because it has been just him and me in some ways, because I am a single mum for so long, we know each other quite well. The great thing about being a single mum is that you build a great connection with your kid. We are each other's support system. Whenever I am low, there is nothing more I want than just hang out with him and I can tell him also, 'Listen, I am really feeling down'."
Kiran praised Azad's empathetic nature and hinted at his humorous side, admitting, "He makes me laugh like crazy." Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao married in 2005 and welcomed Azad in 2011. The couple divorced in 2021. They share a very amicable relationship.
Meanwhile, Kiran Rao returned to direction with Laapataa Ladies. The film was selected as India's official entry to Oscars 2025.
