Denzel Washington has revealed on Australia’s Today Show that he will be in Black Panther 3. The upcoming Marvel film will be directed and written by Ryan Coogler and Washington shared that Coogler is writing him a role in the film before his retirement.
Back in August, Washington revealed that “there are very few films” left for him in his career. As for working on Coogler’s Black Panther 3, Washington said, “For me it’s about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. It’s probably not that many. I want to do things I haven’t done.” On speaking of his career, Washington continued, “I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello at 70,” referring to his Broadway Shakespeare production co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal that opens in February 2025. He added, “After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I’ve been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello and after that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
At this time, Marvel has yet to announce the sequel, but fans are already expecting the third installment in the franchise. Washington’s involvement with the film would be a full circle moment for the actor as Chadwick Boseman once revealed that Washington paid for his acting school one summer and therefore, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.” When honoring him with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2019, Boseman said to Washington, “My who cast stands on your shoulders. The daily battles won, the thousand territories gained, the many sacrifices you made for the culture on film sets through your career, the things you refused to compromise along the way lay the blueprints for us to follow.”
