In an interview with ANI, Manisha Koirala revealed that she was earlier supposed to do a movie with Ram Gopal Varma. However, Dil Se came to her and she got a chance to explore a character she never did before. Mani Ratnam told the actress that she doesn't have to play a typical terrorist and told what he expects from her performance. Koirala saw it as a great opportunity to explore the negative side of her character.

Further in this entertainment news, the Heeramandi star revealed that the original script had a different ending, but the makers changed it later. "In the original script that we had agreed on, the cause was larger than love for both the characters. In the original version, he lets her die, and that was agreeable to all of us, but they changed it last minute." Manisha revealed that in the original script, Shah Rukh Khan's character wasn't supposed to die. The actress stated that she preferred the original ending over the one that is shown."
