People Are Arguing About Whether Tate McRae Is The New Britney Spears, And It's Made Millennials And Gen Z'ers Furious At Each Other

by · BuzzFeed

As I'm sure we all know, Tate McRae is the newest pop queen that's been taking the world by storm as of late.

Her song "greedy" from her 2023 album THINK LATER went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and her other recent single "exes" was hugely popular. Basically, Tate is killing it.

Since 21-year old Tate is not just a singer-songwriter but also an award-winning dancer, she truly BRINGS IT with the energy and choreo every time she performs. Like, Tate definitely has some pretty iconic stage presence for someone so young.

So naturally, comparisons between Tate and Britney Spears have risen along with Tate's popularity. Britney even interviewed Tate and told her she loves her song "you broke me first." In the same interview, Britney called Tate an "incredible performer."

Tate clearly loves Britney back, too. Not only has she spoken about her appreciation for her, but Tate also paid homage to Britney at the VMAs on Sept. 11 by wearing a similar outfit that Britney wore at the VMAs in 2001.

And ever since Tate released a new music video last week for her most-recent single "It's ok I'm ok," this debate has REALLY heated up online.

But there has also been a HUGE amount of eyebrow-raising toward this Tate claim — it seems to have hit a sore spot for passionate millennial Britney stans.

And Gen Z'ers are volleying it right back at millennials who are slamming Tate's talent. It's getting heated out there!

all this “tate mcrae could never be britney” shit being hidden behind some form of claiming tate doesn’t work as hard is so crazy to me.

tate was THIRTEEN when she became the most successful Canadian of all time on SYTYCD, which Canadians couldn’t even vote/support her for…

But while this debate was happening, people also took the opportunity to name a few other singers who could very well be the Gen Z version of Britney.

annoys me that ppl want to claim anybody other than TINASHE is the new britney as if it wasn’t literally passed down to her. idc she has the best choreo out of any pop girl right now and I mean that.

And people are now discussing other "mother-daughter" celeb comparisons, which has turned this conversation into a fun little game.

I’ll say one thing. Music is in a bad spot, but Chappell Roan is a legit pop star. She makes bangers & hates people. She might be the next Gaga fr.
