Line of Duty star teases fans with return of BBC drama

Star of BBC drama Line of Duty Adrian Dunbar has teased fans with the possibility of its return, three years after the beloved show's thrilling conclusion. The show's followers were initially disappointed when actor Martin Compston, known for his role on Line Of Duty, suggested there were "no immediate plans" to renew the series.

Vicky McClure, famed for her performance in Line Of Duty, dodged questions about the series making a comeback when probed on ITV's This Morning back in May, reports the Mirror.

Nonetheless, rumours about a potential revival picked up steam in recent months following reports that Martin, Vicky and Adrian Dunbar have been in talks with series creator Jed Mercurio considering a contract and scheduling for a seventh season.

Now, 66-year-old Adrian has dropped hints that the beloved series might make its way back to the BBC, with only a script currently lacking.

Adrian spoke to Times Radio on Monday, November 11, expressing optimism about the show's return: "I hope so. Looks like it. All the signals and everything is kind of, you know, (positive) but as somebody said, until the script hits the desk you can't be 100 per cent sure. So we're all hoping that someone somewhere will make an announcement and say, yes, it's happening. And we can all take it from there. I can tell you one thing...the day they announce it, it's going to burn up the internet."

He then referenced his role as Superintendent Ted Hastings, saying: "To end up creating what is an iconic character on British television and also within an iconic TV show would have been a huge ambition of mine. And so to do it is a very humbling and very satisfying experience. So that's how I'd describe it. It's been, it's something that kind of when you think about it keeps you warm. It's very, very nice."

Adrian has previously sparked excitement among 'Line Of Duty' enthusiasts. In a July 2024 interview on 'Good Morning Britain', Susanna Reid questioned him about the future of the series, suggesting it should make a comeback.

Adrian responded: "I think so, Vicky [McClure] thinks so, Martin [Compston] thinks so. Everybody thinks so. It'll be down to the BBC and Doctor Jed Mercurio I think, when and whether we do it."

He shared their collective enthusiasm for a return, noting they were "all up for it" and "keeping their fingers crossed". He added: "Hopefully somebody will make a decision at some point and everybody will go 'Oh they're off again!'".

However, back in April, Martin spoke to The Daily Mirror and seemed less hopeful: "I'm sorry. They're some of my closest friends, we all love Jed [Mercurio], and we'd all love to work together at some point, but there are no immediate plans.

He reiterated: "It's just getting us all together and stuff. We'd like to but, yeah, these things are a bit complicated. But there are no immediate plans."
