Princess Charlotte's full name includes sweet nods to two beloved late royals

Princess Charlotte, Prince William's young daughter, stands as the third successor to the throne following her dad and older brother George.

Born on 2 May 2015 at London's St. Mary’s Hospital, she’s embraced school life at Berkshire's Lambrook School alongside her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis. While we often hear her called Charlotte, her full name beautifully honours late Royal family members: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Her first name could mirror her grandfather King Charles, while also linking to her mum Kate—whose sister Pippa shares the middle name Charlotte. The second name, Elizabeth, sweetly remembers her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, whereas Diana pays homage to William's mother and Charlotte's grandmother, Princess Diana.

Upon her arrival, an official statement celebrated by the then-Queen confirmed: "The [then] Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge."

Simone Simmons, a close friend of the late Princess Diana, expressed to Vanity Fair that "Diana would be over the moon. It's William's way of honouring his mother's memory. A way of making sure Diana's legacy lives on. This way she will never be forgotten. When Diana was alive, William promised her when he was King [that] Diana would have her HRH restored. This is his way of doing it.", reports the Mirror.

Meanwhile, at home, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, affectionately calls her daughter Lottie. During an encounter at Windsor Park stadium in Northern Ireland in 2019, influencer Laura-Ann Barr, known online as @all.thats.pretty, shared that Catherine referred to her daughter as Lottie instead of Charlotte.

It's believed that Charlotte's school friends also use the nickname Lottie Wales, reflecting the titles bestowed upon her parents by King Charles following the Queen's passing.

Katie Nichol, Vanity Fair's Royal correspondent, reports that William and Catherine dub Charlotte the "Warrior Princess" because of her spirited nature. Additionally, William is said to use the endearing French term "mignonette" for his daughter.

Should Charlotte ascend to the throne one day, she has the liberty to choose any of her names for her official title. The Constitutional Unit at University College London clarified in 2022, in anticipation of King Charles III's Coronation, that a new monarch has the freedom to select their regnal name.

The unit reveals: "King Edward VII chose Edward as his regnal title, although hitherto he had been known by his first name of Albert. King Edward VIII also chose Edward as his regnal title, although he was known to his family and friends as David."

In line with this tradition, Princess Charlotte could potentially make history as the UK's first Queen Diana, or she might choose to honour her late great-grandmother and take on the title of Queen Elizabeth III.
