by · ChronicleLive

In a busy week for Auf Wiedersehen Pet stars, with the news that Kevin Whately will appear in the final series of Vera, it has now been confirmed that Timothy Spall, another much loved member of the cast of the classic sitcom, will star in a new film that is about to be shot in the North East.

And he will be in A-list company, as the much loved actor, who earned rave reviews for BBC drama The Sixth Commandment last year, joins big names in the cast for Night and Day including Absolutely Fabulous icon and national treasure Jennifer Saunders and singer Lily Allen.

A big screen adaptation of a Virginia Woolf tale from 1919, Night & Day is an un-romantic comedy about a passionate astronomer Katharine Hilbery who does everything she can to avoid romantic love and marriage, with it being revealed that Hayley Bennett, famous for roles in the likes of The Equalizer, The Magnificent Seven and The Girl on the Train playing Katharine, while Smile and LDN singer Lily will play a fearless suffragette Mary.

BAFTA nominee Tina Gharavi is directing the movie and featured in a post all about it on Instagram, in which it was explained that she had been in the North East over the summer for a 'recce' of potential filming locations, including Beamish Museum and Tanfield Railway.

Production on Night and Day is set to be split its UK base in the North East and Cologne in Germany, with other stars in the cast including Elyas M’Barek and Poldark's Jack Farthing.

Earlier this week, Timothy's Auf Wiedersehen Pet co-star and former Peak Practice actor Kevin was one of three guest stars to be confirmed for Vera's finale, alongside ex Coronation Street favourite Shobna Gulati and Band of Gold's Cathy Tyson.
