Argentinian police have disclosed details surrounding the death of Liam Payne at a Buenos Aires hotel. The 31-year-old former One Direction member died after a fall from a third-floor balcony at the hotel on Wednesday night.

Early this morning, authorities confirmed a 911 call was made from the hotel, with officers informed of 'an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol'. Upon arrival at the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo district, a loud noise was reportedly heard from an inner courtyard.

Paramedics reached the scene shortly after 5pm local time, where Liam was discovered with 'very serious injuries' that left 'no possibility of resuscitation'.

Police have verified that he fell from a balcony on the third floor. In a statement to AFP, officers reported: "Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo.", reports the Manchester Evening News.

It is believed that the artist's body has been taken to a nearby morgue. The Foreign Office (FCDO) has also acknowledged that it is liaising with Argentinian officials 'regarding reports of the death of a British man'.

However, a spokesperson for the FCDO declined to comment further, including on the identity of the man involved. Following the shocking news, images emerged showing distraught fans congregating outside the hotel after police had cordoned off the area.

Forensic investigators were seen entering and exiting in white protective suits and blue gloves. Fans were captured lighting candles and placing flowers along the roadside in an impromptu vigil as they paid tribute to the much-loved music star.

Liam was part of the formation of boy band One Direction in 2010, alongside Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles, after each of them auditioned individually for The X Factor. After becoming one of the world's biggest pop groups with five albums and four world tours, One Direction took an indefinite break in 2016.

Earlier this month, Liam attended bandmate Niall's concert in Argentina with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
