Sex survey reveals films and TV shows Brits want to role-play the most

The moment that Gavin and Stacey fans have been waiting for is almost finally here, with the highly anticipated Christmas Special set to air on Christmas Day.

While it's not exactly the raunchiest programme, it seems that watching the sitcom has got some British couples feeling frisky.

A new survey has revealed the films and TV shows that Brits want to role-play the most - including Gavin and Stacey.

Experts from LELO surveyed 2,000 Brits about sex lives, and found that the majority (65 per cent) said they want to try role-play in the bedroom.

While several respondents said they'd like to role-play reality programmes such as Love Island and The Traitors, psychotherapist Kate Moyle advises against this genre.

'It's best to stick to fictional characters,' she said.

'Blurring the boundaries between IRL relationships and role play can get murky and it can be hard to separate out the two if you then meet or spend time with the person you were role-playing in real life, and it can create anxieties or worries where there don't need to be.'

For the survey, LELO asked the respondents if they'd like to use role-play in the bedroom, and about their top fantasy scenarios.

The results revealed that relationship dramas are the top genre for inspiration, followed by Action-Adventure-Fantasy, Historical, and Superheroes.

Reality TV came in fifth place, followed by Sci-Fi, and Workplace Dramas.

In terms of the individiual TV programmes and films that serve as inspiration for role-play, it was Fifty Shades of Grey that topped the list.

However, other, more unusual options also proved popular.

Several respondents said they'd like to role-play Love Island, while musical fans claimed that it was Wicked that served as their inspiration in the bedroom.

Bizarrely, professional football was the sixth most popular TV show or film on the list!

'Inspiration can come from all quarters, with many respondents preferring to take on characters from shows including James Bond, EastEnders, Last of the Summer Wine and Gavin and Stacey,' LELO said.

'While others use their own imaginations, and most commonly call upon the emergency services (nurses and fire fighters) or workplace scenarios including office colleagues.'

Unsurprisingly, the results revealed a disparity between the sexes.

When it came to historical inspiration, women said they were more inspired by Bridgerton, while men chose Gladiator.

Meanwhile, men were four times more likely to want to role-play Doctor Who and Spider-Man, while women were twice as likely to choose Star Wars and Wicked.

If you're thinking about trying TV or movie-inspired role-play, Ms Moyle advises being clear with your partner about your preferences.

'Talk about any firm yes's and firm no's in advance,' she said.

'Whilst the idea of talking about it before might make it feel less spontaneous, a bit of planning will go a long way.

'You may really like the idea of a certain character or scene but it's useful to identify to yourpartner the specific parts of it that feel most erotic or exciting to you so that they can really run with that.'
