Sarah Ferguson claims being 'cut open' tackled binge eating addiction

Sarah Ferguson has revealed that it took being 'cut open' for cancer to address her binge eating addiction and find a new lease on life.

The 65-year-old former wife of Prince Andrew is currently in Australia on a book tour, just weeks after King Charles and Queen Camilla visited the country.

The Duchess of York was being interviewed by the Daily Telegraph on Sunday when she talked about the aftershock of her breast cancer diagnosis last year.

The royal family member underwent a single mastectomy and later discovered malignant melanomas when she underwent reconstructive breast surgery.

Fergie said she had only gone to the routine mammogram because her 'bossy' sister Jane, who lives on the New South Wales Central Cost, had nagged her.

'My melanoma scars, the scars of my cancer, it took me being literally carved up to cut away the addictions of self-doubt and self-judgment that I have lived with since the age of 11.'

'Don’t wait to be cut open in order to cut away the addiction. My addiction was my addiction to food.

'So I ate to compensate for my feeling. It started at 11, my whole world was food, and my life was in the corner on the bottom right hand side.'

The British royal said the cancer made her reprioritise and centre her life, rather than food.

'When I got cancer I put my life back in the middle and food back in its rightful place, not intentionally. It just happened because I realised that I was eating instead of living. At 65, I’m now free of the shackles of unworthiness and self-doubt,' she said.

Ferguson added that she has more of a sense of purpose now.

'I am a badass grandmother with a sense of purpose, a badass grandmother, a sexy, sappy, badass grandmother.'

'Don’t wait to be cut open in order to cut away the addiction. My addiction was my addiction to food,' she said, before claiming she is now 'a badass grandmother with a sense of purpose'

Fergie recently became an official patron for Prevent Breast Cancer, which she described as 'an incredible organisation that is dedicated to the prediction and prevention of breast cancer'.

The Duchess celebrated her 65th birthday recently, alongside her daughter, Princess Beatrice.

Beatrice, who is married to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, is currently pregnant with her second child.
