The Russian army says it has taken control of the Ukrainian city of Kherson, one of the most strategically important cities.

Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine enters its seventh day on Wednesday with the Russian forces also fighting to take over the capital city of Kyiv.

“The Russian divisions of the armed forces have taken the regional centre of Kherson under full control,” Russia’s defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in televised remarks on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera.

According to him, public services and transport are not being interrupted and are operating as usual.

“The city is not experiencing shortages of food and essential goods,” he said.

The spokesperson said that the Russian forces are currently in talks with local authorities in order to ensure order is being maintained.
