US President Joe Biden slammed his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for the "unprovoked" attack on Ukraine and said, "Putin thought he could roll into Ukraine — and the world would roll over."

"Instead, he met a wall of strength he never imagined. He met the Ukrainian people," said Joe Biden in his first State of Union address early Wednesday.

"We, the United States of America, stand with the Ukrainian people," Joe Biden said. In his early morning address, Biden also said that the Russian economy is in "ruins".

Joe Biden reiterated that US forces "will not engage in the conflict with Russian forces in Ukraine." He, however, said, "The US and our allies will defend every inch of NATO territory with full force of our collective power."

"Together with our allies, we are providing support to the Ukrainians in their fight for freedom. Military assistance. Economic assistance. Humanitarian assistance," Biden said.

"And we will continue to aid the Ukrainian people as they defend their country and to help ease their suffering," Biden said.

Joe Biden's address came as the Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its Day 7. As heavy shelling and fighting happen in parts of Ukraine, the country's capital Kyive remains under fire.

Russia's defence ministry said it was planning to strike targets in Kyiv used by Ukraine's security service.

Earlier on Tuesday, an Indian student lost his life in the shelling in Kharkiv. In a briefing, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said no more Indian nationals are left behind in Kyiv and emphasised the government's efforts to evacuate citizens from Kharkiv.
