Our 16 Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2022

And where you'll be able to watch every single one.

A new year means new movies. Specifically, that means new horror movies, which let's be real, are some of the most exciting releases. We all know what we're going to get from a Marvel movie, or an Oscar-bait drama like, say, Spencer (although it deserves the praise). But horror is a genre where some truly weird stuff can happen. Just last year, James Wan's Malignant came out of nowhere and took daring risks, even if audiences on Rotten Tomatoes didn't necessarily agree. Last Night in Soho featured a heart-wrenching storyline (and rising star Anya-Taylor Joy) at the heart of its horror, overlaid with an engrossing soundtrack and layered with stunning visuals.

2022 is already set for an exciting slate of horror, with a ridiculous amount of star-power attached to it. Sebastian Stan is playing a cannibal (or maybe a vampire? We don't know yet), Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise her role as Laurie Strode one last time in the final installment of the newest Halloween trilogy, and there's even a creepy kidnapping movie feature Ethan Hawke as a masked villain on the way. And that's just some of what's set to come out in theaters and on streaming services this year. So grab your popcorn and your nightlight—it's about to get spooky.

We should mention the major elephant—or shall we say chainsaw—in the room. Although the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre was one of the most anticipated horror films of the year, our review dubbed it a cheap attempt to reap nostalgia and a knockoff of the 2018 Halloween reboot trilogy (which is on this list). Watch at your own risk, but if you want our opinion, it's so bad that "you'll probably find yourself laughing like a maniac when Leatherface inevitably ends up victorious."

One final note: some of these movies are already out, or went to theaters and have yet to hit streaming services. But don't worry, we'll keep you updated throughout the year as to where you can get your scare on.

1. Scream

With Scream's January 2022 release, it's clear nostalgia will get people into theaters. The newest installment of the horror-movie-that-spoofs-other-horror-movies franchise did surprisingly well at the box office, and has already spawned another sequel. Fans of the franchise won't be disappointed.

Scream isn't available to stream, but we'll update this space when it is.

2. Fresh

Taking a break from his Marvel Cinematic Universe role (and his recent stint on Pam and Tommy), Sebastian Stan stars opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones as a boyfriend with a peculiar appetite...

Fresh will stream on Hulu on March 4.

3. X

Mia Goth, Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, and Jenna Ortega (who also appears in Scream, and will lead Netflix's upcoming Wednesday Addams series) star in this raunchy A24 horror film about a group who rent a cabin from a mysterious old man to film an adult movie.

X will premiere in theaters on March 18, 2022.

4. Umma

Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) stars in this upcoming horror about a woman who has to grapple with a spirit attached to her estranged mother's ashes. Iris K. Shim wrote and directed, while Sam Raimi produced the film.

Umma will be in theaters on March 18, 2022.

5. Morbius

Jared Leto stars in this upcoming Sony-produced adaptation of the Marvel anti-hero Morbius. Suffering from a lifelong blood disease, a doctor goes on a harrowing journey to find a cure and suddenly finds himself transformed into a powerful vampire. Will Morbius connect with Spider-Man? We'll be wondering until the release.

Morbius will premiere in theaters on April 1, 2022.

6. Firestarter

Based on a Stephen King novel, and rebooting the original 1984 adaptation, Firestarter stars Zac Efron as a father trying to protect his daughter from a shady government group when she gains pyrokinetic powers.

Firestarter will premiere in theaters and on Peacock on May 13, 2022.

Jessie Buckley stars in this upcoming horror movie directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation). There's not much more to go off of aside from a creepy trailer, but that's really all we need to get excited about this one.

Men will premiere in theaters on May 20, 2022.

8. The Black Phone

Ethan Hawke stars in this dark thriller adapted from a story by horror and writer Joe Hill (of Locke and Key and NOS4A2). Hawke plays a kidnapper and serial killer who terrorizes a town. But his newest victim has the chance to get away when he discovers he can hear the kidnapper's past victims through an unplugged black phone in the room.

The Black Phone will be in theaters on June 22, 2022.

9. Nope

Jordan Peele is back with another horror movie that's sure to be the talk of the year. Nope stars Steven Yeun, Keke Palmer, Daniel Kaluuya, and Euphoria's Barbie Ferriera. There's not much information about the movie yet, but from the cryptic trailer, we can make a decent guess it's alien-related.

Nope will premiere in theaters on July 22, 2022.

10. Salem's Lot

Based on a 1978 Stephen King novel of the same name, Salem's Lot is about a writer who returns to his hometown for inspiration, only to discover a vampire is preying on the townspeople.

Salem's Lot will premiere on September 9, 2022.

11. Halloween Ends

Jamie Lee Curtis is set to reprise her role in the third and final installment of the newest Halloween trilogy, where she'll (hopefully) kill Michael Myers once and for all. According to People, filming has already wrapped, and Curtis has said goodbye to final girl Laurie Strode for good.

Halloween Ends is set to premiere in theaters on Oct. 14, 2022.

12. Orphan: First Kill

Orphan premiered back in 2009, but over a decade later, a prequel is in the works. With Isabella Furhman reprising her role as the murderess Esther, the new movie will also star Julia Stiles as a woman who has to fight to save her family from Esther's wrath.

Orphan: First Kill has no official release date yet.

13. Evil Dead Rise

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell (otherwise known as Ash of the Evil Dead franchise), are co-executive producing the fifth installment of the popular Evil Dead franchise. Rather than focus on Ash, the newest film will follow two sisters who encounter a mysterious book (you know the one) that makes them fight for their lives. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will go straight to HBO Max for streaming.

Evil Dead Rise will premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2022.

14. Hellraiser

A reboot of the 1987 film of the same name, and the eleventh installment of the Hellraiser franchise, the newest film will star. Jamie Clayton (Sense8, The L Word: Generation Q) as the villain Pinhead. There's not much more info about the film, but according to Variety, the film will debut sometime this year on Hulu.

Hellraiser will premiere on Hulu sometime in 2022.

15. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies

Starring Amandla Stenberg, Pete Davidson, and others, this upcoming slasher film is set to debut at South by Southwest in March, meaning it could hit theaters by the summer.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies has no official release date yet.

16. Disappointment Blvd.

Director Ari Aster, who also helmed Hereditary and Midsommar, is back with Disappointment BLVD, a horror-comedy starring Joaquin Phoenix, Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, and others. There's not much besides a logline, courtesy of Variety: “An intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.”

Disappointment BLVD has no official release date yet.
