After years of negotiation over the future of the Indian Ocean islands, the Government has struck an agreement to give up sovereignty of the archipelago.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the agreement secures the vital military base at Diego Garcia, the largest in the chain of islands off the tip of India, for the future.

India has consistently supported Mauritius’ claim for sovereignty over Chagos archipelago. The government welcomes the agreement between UK and Mauritus on the long-standing legal dispute.
