The mystery behind thousands of black balls which plagued beaches across Sydney has finally been solved.

Scientists have revealed that the mysterious fat balls plaguing beaches are not toxic tar from an oil spill but actually have a fare more disgusting origin.

The so-called tar balls were a combination of oil, human faeces and other substances, scientists say.
