Kraken rally to force overtime before falling 4-3 to Jets

by · The Seattle Times

Jets 4, Kraken 3, OT at Climate Pledge Arena

Notable: The Kraken lost their second straight as Winnipeg became the first Canadian team to start the season with at least seven straight wins since Montreal started 9-0 in 2015-16. Seattle rallied with two late goals to force overtime and pick up a point, but Nikolaj Ehlers slipped one past Joey Daccord in OT.

Matty Beniers scored his first two goals of the season with a first period snipe over Connor Hellebuyck’s right shoulder to give the Kraken an early lead and redirected Brandon Montour’s shot with 3:22 left to tie the game at 3-3. Oliver Bjorkstrand appeared to give Seattle a 2-1 lead midway through the second only to have the goal wiped out on review due to goalie interference by Yanni Gourde.

Daccord made 32 saves and continued to make the case as Seattle’s clear No. 1 goalie, but couldn’t make up for a bad bounce and two defensive breakdowns that all led to goals. Nino Niederreiter scored twice for the Jets.

Goal of the game: Beniers’ goals were vitally important for his confidence after last season when it took until the 14th game for him to score his first goal. But the best goal goes to Jordan Eberle, who slid a backhander past Hellebuyck with 8:59 left to pull Seattle within 3-2.

Star of the game: Daccord will be tagged with four goals against, which is probably an unfair assessment of his performance. Daccord made several stops on high-danger chances from the Jets, none better than his glove save on Neal Pionk in the second period.

On tap: The Kraken close out their five-game homestand on Saturday hosting Carolina. The Hurricanes will be playing the fifth game of a six-game road trip.
