Amazing photos of the Northern Lights from across Derby and Derbyshire

People in Derby and Derbyshire were amazed by the spectacle late last night

Residents of Derbyshire were dazzled by the Northern Lights last night (Thursday October 10). The rare phenomenon was captured in a series of photos from across Derby and Derbyshire.

The dazzling colours in the sky were visible due to a severe geomagnetic storm in the late hours of Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday morning. The Met Office had said people in the north of the country were more likely to see it, however, these pictures show it was visible across Derbyshire.

The pink, purple, red and green are caused by charged particles colliding with gases in the earth's atmosphere specifically around the magnetic poles. As they collide they omit these colours which were visible due to the clear skies experienced across the UK last night.
