Police name man charged after car mounted pavement and crashed into pedestrian
by Oscar Fisher · Derbyshire LiveA man in his 30s has been charged with five offences after a car collided with a pedestrian in a busy Derby street. Police received reports that a green BMW collided with a man in Normanton Road at 11.30am on Wednesday (November 6).
The pedestrian, a man in his 60s, suffered serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening or life changing. Shortly after the incident, a spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 11.32am on November 6 to Burton Road in Derby. The caller reported a road traffic collision.
"We sent a crewed ambulance, and one patient has been taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.” Normanton Road was partially blocked in both directions for five hours due to the collision on the roundabout which connects the A601 Lara Croft Way. It reopened at about 4.30pm.
Sohail Afzal has since been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving whilst disqualified, criminal damage and driving without insurance.
The 33-year-old, of Burton Road, Derby, was remanded in police custody and appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (November 7) where he was further remanded to prison and will appear at court at a later date.
