A Texas Refinery Accidently Released THIS Deadly Chemical

· NewsTalk 1290

A deadly chemical was released into the air at a Texas refinery, killing one person and injuring others.

Emergency response rushed to the Shell PEMEX facility in Deer Park, Texas after a gas release was reported at one of its units. According to Pemex Deer Park, the gas was released at 4:40 pm. Channel Industrial Mutual Aid (CIMA), Harris County Emergency Management personnel, and other government agencies quickly secured the area.

A shelter-in-place was issued and the Pasadena Fire Department warned those in the affected area, "If you are in this area, please go inside, close all windows and doors, and turn off the air-conditioner until an all-clear is given."

The deadly chemical released was hydrogen sulfide.

"Some members of the community may see flaring as we safely contain the situation," the facility said in the statement. "We are closely monitoring air quality and are not detecting any offsite impacts."

The PEMEX facility is a refinery that processes crude oil from several countries to produce gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel fuel, and ship fuel.

Chemical plants and oil refineries are common, especially in Texas. However, they can become extremely dangerous if anything goes wrong. The gas release at Shell Pemex isn't the first time something serious has gone wrong at a plant or refinery.

Back in March of 2023, a chemical plant in Pasadena caused a huge blast felt by residents in the area.

A massive explosion happened during the transfer of petroleum from a tanker truck to a storage tank.
