Aces beat Wings despite ‘Core Four’ resting with playoff matchup set

by · Las Vegas Review-Journal

The Aces ended their regular season with an 98-84 win over the Dallas Wings at Michelob Ultra Arena on Thursday.

The result didn’t matter because the team learned before tip off it was locked into the No. 4 seed in the WNBA playoffs thanks to the No. 3 Connecticut Sun’s 87-54 win over the Chicago Sky. The Aces will face the No. 5 Seattle Storm in a best-of-three series in the first round, with Game 1 taking place at 7 p.m. Sunday at Michelob Ultra Arena.

Megan Gustafson scored a game-high 24 points Thursday, while Tiffany Hayes scored a season-high 21 points in the team’s ninth win in 10 games. Five players scored in double figures for the Aces (27-13).

The team opted to rest its “Core Four” of A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young prior to the game. Sydney Colson, Kate Martin and Alysha Clark joined Gustafson and Hayes in the starting five.
