Fire on tenth floor of Mercure Hotel

Firefighters were called to a fire in a central Wellington hotel early this morning.

Fire and Emergency were called to the Mercure Hotel at 3.30am to a fire on the 10th floor of the building.

Acting senior station officer Martin Hennessy said it was an electrical fire which was quickly contained.

The fire was extinguished at 4.01am, he said.

People staying in the building were evacuated but they had since been allowed to return to their rooms.

A fire investigator will be sent to the hotel later this morning.
