Police investigate sudden death of baby in Newtown

Wellington District Police are investigating the sudden death of an 8-month-old baby at a Newtown social housing complex yesterday.

There will be a scene examination today, after which a blessing will take place. A post-mortem examination will also be carried out.

Police say the investigation continues with the co-operation of the family, and there are no wider concerns for safety.

Emergency services were called to the Newtown Park Apartments – which are owned by the Wellington City Council – just before midday yesterday.

The Council said it would provide police with CCTV footage if requested.

“This is a police matter, and we, along with the landlord Te Toi Mahana, will assist them with their enquiries regarding this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the whānau during this difficult time.”
