Blazing van closes southbound lanes on SH1

Southbound lanes on Wellington’s State Highway 1 were closed when a van caught fire near Paekakariki this afternoon.

The van caught fire at the northern end of Transmission Gully, after the Mackays Crossing interchange.

The fire was reported at 2.20pm.

One of the southbound lanes reopened ten minutes later.

A second lane reopened at 3pm, but the left lane remained blocked.

Fire and Emergency said firefighters attended from three stations – Paraparaumu, Porirua, Paekakariki.

There were no injuries.
