Google and Volkswagen have teamed up to build an AI platform exclusively for VW drivers. The search giant will infuse Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) into an app for Volkswagen drivers.

Volkswagen asks Google to build an AI app for drivers

Google’s Gemini Gen AI has been growing by leaps and bounds. The search giant is now moving beyond individual users, and offering its Gen AI expertise to corporations.

Google’s revised business strategy seems to involve offering businesses tools to build enterprise AI applications. Accordingly, Google will reportedly provide an AI assistant to Volkswagen.

Specifically speaking, Google will improve the currently available VW tool by infusing its Gemini AI into the app. Volkswagen drivers would be able to ask the company’s in-app assistant questions. Drivers would get answers to their queries via their car’s dashboard or their phones.

It appears Volkswagen is interested in Google’s Gemini large language models. Gemini AI can understand and generate predictive responses to human language. Coupled with cloud computing capacity and detailed Volkswagen vehicle information, drivers would have answers to most of the queries about their cars.

The updated VW Tool with Google’s Gemini AI is free for Volkswagen’s customers. About 120,000 owners of Volkswagen’s Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models can try the app now. The rest of Volkswagen’s vehicles, from 2020 onwards, could get the feature early next year.

Google’s AI solutions use data from multiple sources to help Volkswagen drivers

Google’s Gemini may be relatively new. However, the company has highly mature products such as YouTube, Gmail, Workspace, and more. Google and Volkswagen are trying to gather information from multiple sources to help drivers.

Gemini AI for Volkswagen cars will be able to draw contextual data from Volkswagen’s owner manuals. However, it can also pull relevant information from YouTube videos. The VW tool will reportedly provide in-depth and step-by-step support through text, images, and videos to help drivers perform complex tasks.

According to Reuters, Google is betting big on AI-driven cloud computing. The company’s cloud computing business already accounts for 10% of its revenue. Google claims its AI solutions, “have driven billions in revenue this year,” but refused to elaborate further.
