LG OLED TV owners are getting a surprise and big upgrade for free

The update has come sooner than expected

by · Tech Advisor

If you have an LG OLED TV then you could well be in for a big and exciting software upgrade for free, and much earlier than anyone expected.

LG’s webOS 24 had previously been exclusive to its latest OLED TVs such as the C4 and G4. However, if you have last year’s C3 or G3, then you’ll also be able to get access to this new OS – which includes a few new bonus features, including one that will excite many users.

Users with an Android smartphone can finally use Google Chromecast to play content on their handheld device on the big screen. That includes YouTube videos, as well as images on Google Photos.

According to Flat Panels HD, the new OS has begun to appear on TVs in the USA and Europe and was later confirmed by LG directly. However, the rollout is gradual, so don’t panic if your TV is still on webOS 23. If you’re in America, you may be able to update it manually using a USB drive.

Other features in the free upgrade include Voice ID, which can recognise your voice to sign you in and deliver personalised features. The Sports Portal offers a quick guide to a team of your choice’s schedule, scores and even odds, while the new Chatbot gives new ways to resolve any problems using your voice.

Furthermore, Quick Cards is a way of neatening up the Home Screen menus. And the update adds the Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode to the C3 and G3’s selection of picture presets, according to Flatpanels HD.

The update was originally expected to land next year, so this is a welcome treat for LG TV owners. But what about if you have a 2023 model that’s not the C3 or the G3?

Other sites such as TechRadar and HDTVTest say that they expect the update to also come to the more affordable B3 OLED model, as well as the QNED and 8K LED TVs at some point, but we don’t yet know when this will be.
