Samsung confirms Galaxy S25, XR headsets and cheaper foldables for 2025

Earnings call reveals what we can expect next year

During its latest earning call, Samsung has confirmed it plans to launch XR (extended reality) headsets next year, along with naming the Galaxy S25 and hinting a more affordable folding phones.

Samsung first announced it was working on a wearable device with support for augmented, mixed and virtual reality back at the Galaxy S23 Unpacked event last year. It will use a customised version of Android and be powered by a Qualcomm chip, possibly the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2.

According to 9to5Google, Samsung was supposed to release a developer version of the device in October 2024, but this has not happened. However, Samsung EVP Jaejune Kim told us that Samsung is “preparing a new form factor” for users seeking a powerful and innovative mobile experience, which could possibly refer to the upcoming extended reality device.

IDC analyst Bryan Ma, spotted in one of the slides from the presentation that the Galaxy S25 branding was confirmed for its ‘2025 outlook’. A little below it says “Improve connectivity among products, including upcoming XR devices, to further elevate user experiences in the Galaxy ecosystem.”

The XR headset could use Micro-OLED or OLEDoS panels with a high refresh rate and multiple cameras. There’s some debate about whether it will be a headset like an Apple Vision Pro or XR glasses, though we could get both.

Cheaper folding phones?

Interestingly, Jaejune Kim also talked about the possibility of developing more affordable foldable phones.

Since their foldable devices have “high customer satisfaction”, the company is considering “reducing purchase barriers” to make them more accessible.

Previously, a Samsung representative has denied rumours of a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold, so it’s unclear if the company changed its mind or if they are only working on a cheaper version of the Z Flip.
