Only the poorest pensioners will get Winter Fuel Payments this year.

Important DWP letters arriving for 1.5 million state pensioners

Letters will contain important information about winter support after major changes

Important letters are dropping through the letterboxes of 1.5 million state pensioners. They letters are setting out who gets cost of living support and how much from the Government this winter.

Winter Fuel Payments are no longer being given to all pensioners following controversial changes by the Government for this year. Those people who do still qualify will be getting letters to let them know, along with full details of what to expect.

Older people on Pension Credit and some other benefits will still get the Winter Fuel Payment, worth either £200 or £300. Around 10 million pensioners who previously got the support will not receive it this year.

Money should enter bank accounts of those eligible between mid-November and Christmas. Letters are being sent to those who are still eligible in October or November.

The Government says: "If you were born before September 23, 1958 you could get either £200 or £300 to help you pay your heating bills for winter 2024 to 2025. This is known as a Winter Fuel Payment.

"You may be eligible if you or your partner get certain benefits. If you’re eligible, you’ll get a letter in October or November saying how much you’ll get.

"If you do not get a letter but you think you’re eligible, check if you need to make a claim. Most eligible people are paid in November or December."

The Government has faced a huge backlash over its decision to means-test Winter Fuel Payments. Serious concerns have been raised about people who miss out on the threshold for support but live on low incomes.

Hundreds of thousands also don't claim Pension Credit when they could, meaning they'll miss out on the winter support.
