Morgan Rogers cites Aston Villa form as he looks forward to next career step

by · Birmingham Live

Morgan Rogers admits the possibility of receiving his first senior England call-up is a motivation for him to continue impressing for Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old has been in excellent for this season and has recorded four goal contributions in his last four Premier League matches. He grabbed two assists in Villa's 3-1 win over Wolves, before then opening his account for the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town.

Following the 0-0 stalemate with Manchester United, Rogers has continued his bright form after the October international break by scoring in the win at Fulham and then teeing up Jhon Duran in the 2-0 victory over Bologna on Tuesday night. Since joining Villa in January in a deal worth an initial £8m, rising to £15m with add-ons, Rogers has made great strides and there have been calls for England interim boss Lee Carsley to give him a call-up.

Instead, Rogers has twice been named in the England Under-21 squad for the September and October internationals. It's something which Emery has been critical of, but he and Rogers both know that a senior call-up will come soon enough if he can maintain his bright form.

"It is motivation for me," Rogers said when asked about the possibility of breaking into the England first-team. "They are obviously all great players who are doing well but so am I. Why can’t it be me next? It is just motivation.

"I watch every England game, I support them, I am a fan. I love it and hopefully if and when the time comes I am ready for my opportunity and my moment.

"It is just about playing every game really. I don’t look past the next game. That [England call-up] is not something I think about when I play football. I just play football to enjoy it and be the best version of me that is possible."

Rogers' Villa teammate Ollie Watkins has been a regular in the England squad for some time now, while Ezri Konsa received call-ups in each of the national team squad throughout this year.
