The BBC will air it's new 'life-affirming' drama Mr Loverman tonight, following the story of a closeted 74-year-old Antiguan man on his journey towards coming out. The series starts on Monday, October 14 and follows the life of Barrington Walker, an eccentric personality, renowned for his dapper style and fondness for retro suits.

But behind his exuberant personality lies a dark secret. Barry, as he's better known to his friends, has been having a secret affair with his childhood best friend Morris unbeknownst to Carmel, his wife of 50 years.

Mr Loverman is based on the Booker prize winning author Bernardine Evaristo’s novel of the same name and has been described as a 'life-affirming story about family, love, and being true to yourself.' Here's everything you need to know about the BBC's 'tender' new drama Mr Loverman.

What is Mr Loverman about?

Mr Loverman follows the life of Barrington Jedidiah Walker, Barry to his mates - a seventy-four year old, Antiguan born man living in Hackney, London. In the show, Barry tries to pluck up the courage to ask his wife Carmel for a divorce after 50 years of marriage.

Carmel senses that Barry has been cheating on her with other women, but little does she know that her husband is secretely having an affair with his best friend and soulmate, Morris. The pair have been childhood friends since their time in the Carribbean.

Now facing the final chapter of his life, Barry has big choices to make that will force his whole family to question their futures. Speaking ahead of the show's release, screenwriter Nathaniel Price said: "We have a 74 year-old Antiguan-born gentlemen as our protagonist, Barry.

"He’s very dapper, loves to dress well and he’s all about how he presents himself. But he’s got this huge secret - that he’s been having an affair with his best friend Morris for the past 50 years, unbeknownst to his wife and two daughters. The series explores the ripple effect of this lie on his family.

"There are various provisions Barry makes in order to maintain his secret and his bravado, which has an effect on his daughters and filters down even to his grandson, Daniel. We start with Barry making the decision to leave Carmel so that he can live in secret with Morris. Throughout the series, this shifts as he realises he has to come out."

How many episodes of Mr Loverman are there?

Mr Loverman is an eight-part series, created by Fable Pictures and based on the Booker prize winning author Bernardine Evaristo’s novel of the same name. All episodes of Mr Loverman will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday, October 14.

The first two episodes will air on BBC One from 9pm that evening, with episodes continuing to air weekly.

Who is in the cast of Mr Loverman?

The cast of Mr Loverman is led by Lennie James who plays the lead character of Barrington Jedidiah Walker. James is known for his roles in The Walking Dead and the first series of Line of Duty.

Where was Mr Loverman filmed?

Mr Loverman is set in London, which is also where most of the series was filmed. Last year, filming crews were spotted in Queen's Park and Stoke Newington in London. Parts the show were also reportedly filmed in Antigua.
