People are only just realising they're saying Reese's incorrectly - and fans are furious

The iconic American brand Reese’s has been gaining popularity in the UK, but many are still struggling with its pronunciation.

The company is renowned for its Peanut Butter Cups - a delicious combination of chunky peanut butter encased in sweet chocolate. Owned by the Hershey Company, this popular treat was invented in the 20s by H. B. Reese, a former dairy farmer and shipping foreman for Milton S. Hershey.

Reese wasn't a permanent fixture at the Hershey company - he was let go when the barn he managed was closed to cut costs. This led him to start his own business, the H.B. Reese Candy Company, in 1923.

Operating as a subsidiary of Hershey, by 1969, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups had become the Hershey Company's best-selling product. It continues to be one of the top-sellers globally, boasting an impressive $3.1 (£2.4) billion in annual sales.

These popular peanut butter treats are a Halloween staple, with many trick-or-treaters returning home with a mini cup or two in their haul. While the brand is easily recognised by its distinctive orange packaging, the correct pronunciation of the brand's name often confuses people.

Many tend to say ‘Reesies’ or ‘Reesees’, but it’s easier to think of how you’d say ‘Reese’s pieces'—the chocolate treats 'belong' to founder Reese, with the 's' indicating possession. Therefore, it should be pronounced ‘Rees-iz’, according to QuillBot.

On social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, users have voiced their frustration over the various pronunciations. It seems the brand name inspires a number of pronunciation blunders. One person commented: "If you pronounce Reese’s as 'Ree-sees' I do not trust you", while another echoed this sentiment, writing: "Can't stand ppl who pronounce Reese's like 'ree - sea's' ...."

A third individual humorously threatened: "I’ll throat punch a MF that says 'ree sees'." Another quipped: "Serial killer behaviour honestly".

One person admitted: "My bad, it’s how everyone else pronounced it around me growing up". However, some preferred the incorrect pronunciation. One declared: "I'm sorry I like whimsy". Another retorted: "You’re so wrong lmao".

Another user complained: "The entirety of North Dakota pronounces it that way and no matter how much I try to educate that the possessive of Reece doesn't magically add extra e sounds and that all the advertising says it the other way, folks still insist on being wrong".

One person was particularly frustrated by the widespread incorrect pronunciation and lamented: "Reese’s Pieces. THAT SHOULD MAKE IT EVEN MORE OBVIOUS; IT’S SUPPOSED TO RHYME WITH 'PIECES!!!' The final thing that makes me go f***ing insane is when people will actually change the pronunciation of pieces to 'pee-sees' to rhyme with their incorrect pronunciation of Reese’s."

Another simply added: "Ree-Sizz pieces. CMON PEOPLE." Other social media users were quick to point out that the founder’s surname was Reese, so the added ‘s’ is merely to indicate possession and not to completely change the pronunciation of the name.
