Aston Villa player ratings as Ross Barkley fouls up after goal and John McGinn left gutted

Aston Villa conceded a 96th minute equaliser against Bournemouth to draw for a third time in their last four Premier League games.

Ross Barkley, who replaced Amadou Onana for the start of the second half, broke the deadlock in the 77th minute as Villa's pressure finally told. Bournemouth's big-money signing Evanilson then came off the bench to draw level by heading in from Marcus Tavernier's free-kick.

While Villa passed up on the chance to claim their sixth league victory, they are now unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions.

John McGinn thought he had opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but VAR ruled it out after the ball had marginally gone out of play before Ollie Watkins reached it before playing the ball to the Villa captain, who curled into the far corner.

After Watkins and Morgan Rogers both passed up on decent chances in the first 10 minutes of the game, Onana came closest to scoring in the 23rd minute after Villa worked a set-piece routine from a dangerous area. Lucas Digne clipped the ball towards the Belgian at the back post before his header back across goal was tipped around the post by Mark Travers.

Villa didn't trouble Bournemouth after VAR ruled McGinn's goal out and before the break. Jhon Duran was introduced on the hour mark as he replaced Morgan Rogers, who played on the periphery of the match. It was Pau Torres who forced the next save from Travers, as the Bournemouth ‘keeper tipped the centre-back’s strike over the bar.

Travers was once again on hand to deny Villa when Watkins headed at goal from Matty Cash’s cross. It was then Duran's turn to try and fire the hosts into the lead in the 73rd minute, but he wrapped his effort wide of the post after Watkins found him in space inside the box.

Ian Maatsen and Leon Bailey both came on in the 71st minute, before combining to help Villa finally force through an advantage seven minutes later. Maatsen stood the ball up at the back post, where Bailey was able to knock it down for Barkley to prod past Travers.

Bournemouth felt aggrieved they weren't awarded at least one penalty after going behind. Antoine Semenyo was booked for diving under pressure from Matty Cash, before the ball fell on Bailey's arm from a cross. VAR agreed with referee Chris Kavanagh's on-field decision.

But there was enough time for the Cherries to level the match up as six minutes were added on. Evanilson glanced Tavernier's cross into the far corner.

Next up for Villa will be Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night (7:45pm kick-off).

Emi Martinez

Martinez was made to work towards the back end of the second half as he pulled off smart saves to deny Justin Kluivert and Dango Ouattara. His distribution was excellent. 7

Matty Cash

Cash came back into the XI after staying on the bench in Villa's midweek win over Bologna last time out. He wasn't breaking forward too much, instead staying in a more reserved role alongside Konsa and Torres. He had a difficult task up against Semenyo, who was booked for diving late on. 7

Ezri Konsa

Konsa shuffled across to centre-back alongside Torres after playing at right-back in his last four appearances in all competitions. He defended excellently against Dango when he was sprinting on the counter-attack after Digne lost the ball high up. Konsa hit a nice strike at goal in the first half, but Travers tipped it over the bar. 7

Pau Torres

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola might well have started Unal ahead of Evanilson for the Turkish forward's physical profile given that Torres struggled initially against Raul Jimenez in the win at Fulham last weekend. But Torres impressed today and competed against the big striker well. He forced a strong save out of Travers in the 62nd minute as he struck towards the top corner from distance. 7

Lucas Digne

Despite Ian Maatsen's excellent performance against Bologna, Digne returned to the side in one of four changes made by Emery. He was a useful outlet on the left as usual. 6

Amadou Onana

Onana was taken off at the break after collecting a booking in the first half. He came close to scoring in the first half, but only won one of the four ground duels he contested. 6

Youri Tielemans

Tielemans was outstanding in possession, as he has been throughout the first two months of the campaign. He got Kluivert booked early on and helped Villa take control. 8

John McGinn

McGinn kept his place in the side after an impressive first start since recovering from a hamstring injury. He will be gutted he couldn't bag in successive games after his goal was ruled out by VAR. 7

Jacob Ramsey

Bailey has been out of form in recent weeks, so Emery started Ramsey ahead of him and put McGinn on the right side. He was lively in the first half and Bournemouth struggled to keep a lid on him. He wasn't as effective after half-time. 7

Morgan Rogers

Rogers hit the ball over the bar after being teed up by Watkins in the seventh minute, but didn't get another chance before coming off for Duran in the second half. He just couldn't quite get into the game and make the impact we all know he can. 6

Ollie Watkins

It was a selfless performance from Watkins today. He had one sight of goal early on and then saw a header well-saved by Travers. But his work off the ball was key today. 7

Ross Barkley (for Onana, 45'): It's become a regular occurrence that Barkley comes on for Onana for either the start of the second half or around the hour mark. Barkley scored his first of the season, but it was his foul which led to Bournemouth's equaliser. 8

Jhon Duran (for Rogers, 58'): Duran passed up on a big chance to put Villa ahead not long after coming on. He caused problems again. 6

Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 71'): Maatsen gave Villa new dynamic down the left side. It was his cross which led to Villa's goal. 7

Leon Bailey (for McGinn, 71'): Bailey played his part after coming on as he nodded the ball down for Barkley to score. 7
