Young mum told she has '16 months left' to make precious memories with her daughter

A young mum has been told by doctors 'there is nothing they can do' after being diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer. Nikita Jones noticed a lump between her breasts last summer, when her daughter Vienna was just two months old.

It was first treated as an abscess but when antibiotics didn't work, Nikita was sent for further checks. In August 2023, she was finally diagnosed with an extremely rare form of sarcoma, a soft tissue cancer.

Nikita, 22, was told she was just one of only two people in the UK who had this form of cancer. She underwent intensive surgery that October, which included a double mastectomy and having part of her chest plate removed.

The mum, from Port Talbot, then underwent six weeks of proton beam therapy which left her with burns. In March this year, Nikita was told she was cancer-free, but in the months that followed, she developed pain and swelling in her legs and was suffering with repeated chest infections, as WalesOnline reports.

A shadow was discovered on her lung, which was initially believed to be inflammation from her treatment, but after being sent for a CT scan, Nikita's mum Vicki Hughes said: "She was nervous then, I think she knew."

The scan showed that Nikita's cancer had returned in her lungs and doctors delivered the devastating news that there was nothing further they could do. She was told that without treatment, she would have six months left to live, or with chemotherapy, around 16 months.

Nikita's family sprung into action to help her make as many memories with her daughter as possible. A GoFundMe page set up by a friend raised £3,000 in less than 24 hours. Nikita has planned a 'f*** you cancer party' for this weekend and Vicki says she has a 'whole village' behind her.
