Why John McGinn goal was ruled out by VAR during Aston Villa draw vs Bournemouth

by · Birmingham Live

Aston Villa squandered the chance to secure their third win in a week after Bournemouth scored a 96th minute equaliser to ensure their Premier League game finished 1-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Unai Emery's side dominated the first half and created a couple of chances to take the lead - as Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana were denied by an in-form Mark Travers.

Villa's positive start paid off in the 27th minute - as John McGinn fired home to put them ahead. However, a VAR check deemed that the ball was out of play in the build-up to the goal.

Jacob Ramsey picked up the ball on the left and drilled the ball across the box which found Ollie Watkins - who kept the move alive and set up McGinn before their midfielder duly swept home. Unfortunately for Villa, the ball was judged to be out and the Premier League explained why the goal was chalked off.

A statement on X - formerly known as Twitter - read: "The referee's call of goal for Aston Villa was checked by the VAR. As there was factual evidence that the ball was out of play in the build-up to the goal, the VAR recommended that the goal was disallowed."

This didn't stop Villa from trying to find an opener and after creating a number of further opportunities, Emery's side took the lead in the 76th minute. Ian Maatsen's cross was headed down at the back post by Leon Bailey and Ross Barkley was there to prod home from close-range.

That looked to be the winning goal, only for Bournemouth to then snatch a point at the death as Evanilson beat Emiliano Martinez to steer the ball into the back of the net.

Speaking after the game, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said: "It's always nice when you have a point at the end in the last minute of the game. I don't feel we played well, but we competed well. We faced a very good team and they started better than us. It was difficult."
