UK weather maps have turned to ice with a deep blue hue spreading across the country as a 0C Polar vortex "brutally" smashes into the UK. Icy conditions are expected into October as the UK faces the first significant snowfall of the year.

New weather maps from WXCharts show parts of the UK being covered in rain while some will witness snowy conditions on October 11. Maps have turned blue from top to bottom as a 742-mile of rain brings in wet and windy conditions across the country.

Some parts of Scotland are seen white with snow, with Inverness and Aberdeen likely to witness a dusting. In an update, Netweather TV explained: "This week will start off unsettled and dominated by low pressure, but there is potential for some drier weather to develop around midweek with lowest pressure transferring towards Scandinavia and high pressure ridging in from the west and south.

"This drier weather is likely to be accompanied by colder air, probably via polar maritime north-westerlies, with some potential for a brief northerly outbreak from the Arctic. Wetter and warmer weather may return towards the end of the week, but there is some uncertainty regarding whether this change will arrive towards the end of Week 3 or slightly beyond that.

"As a result, rainfall totals are expected to be closer to normal during this week, but probably still above normal in the south of Britain, potentially below normal in parts of Scotland. Temperatures are likely to be near or slightly below normal overall in the north, perhaps slightly above in the south.

"Sunshine amounts are forecast to be above normal in the north, but near or rather below normal in the south-west." The BBC adds: "The overall trend is for changeable or unsettled conditions to continue, with occasional spells of quite windy weather and temperatures dipping well below average at first.

"Temperatures could recover over the next week, though it is more likely that unsettled conditions will continue. High pressure may start to build in at some point in early October."
