A man was arrested after a terrifying 30-minute carjacking spree in Birmingham city centre. The suspect was detained after two cars and a moped were targeted, and an ambulance damaged, within half-an-hour yesterday afternoon, Monday, October 7.

A woman driver was pulled from a car in Lancaster Circus at around 3.40pm before the vehicle crashed at Dartmouth Circus after being driven away. Police said an attempt was then made to take a moped from its rider.

When that failed, bricks were thrown at an ambulance, damaging one of its doors. A second car was stolen from its owner in Dartmouth Circus minutes later before it crashed at Dartmouth Middleway, near Jennings Road.

A Toyota car was also hit with a brick, again causing damage. A suspect attempted to run, police added, but was arrested at around 4pm.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "A man is in our our cells today after a spate of carjackings and attempts to steal vehicles from drivers in Birmingham city centre. Officers who'd swarmed the area arrested a man at around 4pm.

"One of the victims did need hospital treatment but has thankfully since been discharged. A 34-year-old man remains in police custody for questioning on suspicion of robbery, attempted robbery and criminal damage as enquiries continue.
