Six places where flood alerts remain after Midlands battered by heavy rain

This week’s heavy rain has led to flooding in some areas of the West Midlands. The region was pelted with rain with an amber alert issued by the Met Office.

The disruptive weather caused widespread road closures and disruption to schools, trains and more. It has now calmed down - and people Birmingham could finally get some relief from the rain this weekend.

Sunny intervals will turn to cloud on Saturday but the showers will hold off until the middle of Sunday. Temperatures are expected to be consistent throughout the weekend, with highs of about 14C and lows of 8C, according to the Met Office.

But there remained a flood warning for the River Cole at Coleshill on Saturday. Five flood alerts were issued for the West Midlands in total.

The last update for Coleshill was issued at 1:57pm on Friday, September 27. It said river levels remained high but were beginning to fall.

It read: “No further rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours but further rainfall is forecast for Sunday, September 29, so remain vigilant. River levels are falling but still pose a flood risk.

"We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are actively checking river levels and the weather forecast.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths and bridges near local watercourses. Plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

However, the overall flood forecast put the risk of flooding for the next five days at low risk. While overflowing rivers could flood low lying land and roads on Saturday, the risk was expected to drop to very low afterwards.

Some 11 flood warnings were removed in the last 24 hours. They include areas such as Selly Oak, Halesowen, Edgbaston and Stirchley.

The full Saturday forecast for the West Midlands read: "A chilly but bright start to Saturday. Plenty of lengthy autumnal sunshine through the day and remaining dry with lighter winds. Temperatures remaining below the seasonal average but pleasant in the sun.

“Remaining dry through this evening with clear skies into the night. Light winds throughout and feeling chilly in the countryside.”

The full Sunday forecast added: “Fine start to the day with hazy sunshine. Turning increasingly wet and windy from the west during the afternoon, persisting into the night.”

And the full outlook for Monday to Wednesday added: “Rain clearing to leave a few bright spells and showers on Monday. Drier on Tuesday and Wednesday with sunny spells and lighter winds. Temperatures returning closer to average.”
