Police watchdog probe West Brom crash which left teen injured after 'stolen' car failed to stop

The police watchdog is probing a crash which left a teenager injured after a 'stolen' car failed to stop for officers prior to the collision. The Volkswagen Golf smashed into a brick wall in West Bromwich over the weekend.

The vehicle, which had been reported stolen, crashed on Hampshire Road, at 11.15pm, on Sunday, October 6. Police said the driver made off on foot. Two of the passengers, aged 17 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

A 19-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it has received a referral from the police and will assess all available information.

An IOPC spokesperson told: “We can confirm that we have received a referral from West Midlands Police in relation to a collision in West Bromwich on 6 October. We will now be assessing the available information to find out if any further action may be necessary by the IOPC.”

A spokesperson for the police said: "We are appealing for information after a woman was seriously injured following a collision in West Bromwich last night. A Volkswagen Golf, which had been reported stolen, hit a brick wall at around 11.15pm on Hampshire Road. The driver made off on foot after failing to stop for officers prior to the collision. Two of the passengers, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.

"The third passenger, a 19-year-old woman suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital for further treatment. A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as is normal procedure in such circumstances. A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by the police to reports of an RTC at the junction of Hampshire Road and Holloway Bank, West Bromwich at 11.30pm on Sunday, 6 October. An ambulance and paramedic officer attended the scene and assessed three occupants of the car. Two men were treated on scene before being left in the care of police. A woman received trauma care on scene before being conveyed on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."
