A drink-driver suspect who was arrested after a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash in West Bromwich has been released under investigation. The tragedy happened on Birmingham Road, near The Hawthorns stadium, shortly before 9pm on Saturday, October 5.

A man, understood to have been in his 40s, was hit by a car by a BP garage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver initially stopped before driving away from the scene. A man, 64, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink in the early hours of Sunday, October 6.

The suspect was released under investigation while enquiries continue, police said this morning. A West Midlands Police spokesperson told BirminghamLive: "A 64-year-old man has been released under investigation while enquiries continue."

In a previous statement, the force said: "A man has been arrested after a pedestrian died after being hit by a car on Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, last night. The man in his 40s sadly died at the scene after being struck by a car, near to The Hawthorns, just before 9pm. His family has been informed and is being supported.

"The driver initially stopped at the scene, but then drove away. At around 5am today, a man aged 64 was arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink. A Mitsubishi car has also been recovered as part of the investigation, and the road has now been re-opened."
