DWP loophole means thousands on two MORE benefits could get Winter Fuel Payment

by · Birmingham Live

A Department for Work and Pensions loophole means thousands on Attendance Allowance or PIP could get the £300 Winter Fuel Payment. PIP is designed to cover the extra living costs associated with having a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability.

DWP Attendance Allowance is for those who have a disability which is severe enough that they need someone to look after you. The DWP has confirmed to The Sun if you are claiming either of the two benefits and your state pension payment by itself is over the weekly income limits, you could also qualify for Pension Credit.

The DWP said whether you would qualify for Pension Credit in this circumstance depends on a range of other factors. The amount of PIP you receive depends on how your condition affects you, not the condition itself. A healthcare professional will assess you to determine the level of help you need.

As of April 2024, PIP rates range from £28.70 to £184.30 per week. If you qualify for the mobility part of PIP, you may also be eligible for a discount on your vehicle tax. Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested weekly payment to help cover costs of pensioners (aged 66+) who need someone to 'attend' them.

You can get it if you have a long-term health condition that means you need help with daily tasks. This includes sensory disabilities (such as blindness), or learning difficulties. You must have needed help or supervision for at least six consecutive months, or have been told by a medical professional that you have 12 months or less to live.

Pension Credit is a Government benefit designed to top up your weekly income if you are a state pensioner with low earnings. The current state pension age is 66. There are two parts to the benefit - Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit.
