Drivers have been warned to only travel if 'absolutely necessary' amid flooding across the West Midlands. Trains have been cancelled and school closed after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain.

Some drivers have even become stuck in the deluge after attempting to drive through high water. Hall Green Police shared images of a vehicle stuck in flooding after a person was rescued from inside the car.

They said: "Please be cautious when crossing flooded areas. Officers have assisted @WestMidsFire in securing flooded area - no one was injured/driver was rescued. Please Stay Safe."

And the rain is set to continue today (Friday, September 27). The Met Office said in regards to the yellow weather warning: "Heavy rain will bring the potential for some flooding and disruption to transport.

"Whilst some areas will miss the worst, heavy showers and some thunderstorms will occur, potentially becoming more organised across a swathe of Wales and into central and eastern England during Thursday evening and on into early Friday morning.

"10-15 mm of rain could occur within an hour from the heavy showers during today with a few places possibly seeing 30 mm over a few hours. There still remains some uncertainty in the details for Thursday evening and overnight, but some locations may see up 20-30 mm of rain in 2-3 hours and perhaps 40-60 mm in 3-6 hours."

Met Office hour-by-hour forecast for Birmingham:

  • 8am - 80 per cent chance of rain
  • 9am - 30 per cent chance of rain
  • 10am - less than 5 per cent chance of rain
  • 11am - less than 5 per cent chance of rain
  • 12pm - less than 5 per cent chance of rain
  • 1pm - 20 per cent chance of rain
  • 2pm - 40 per cent chance of rain
  • 3pm - 10 per cent chance of rain
  • 4pm - less than 5 per cent chance of rain

A spokesperson for Met Office added: "Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

"People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

"Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
