Police made an arrest after a massive chase across two counties sparked when a driver almost hit officers and passersby. The car was finally stopped at Norton Canes, near Cannock, having first fled in Derbyshire and then failing to stop in Lichfield.

It was brought to a 'forceful' stop when police used 'tactical contact' on Sunday afternoon, October 13. Police said one person was taken into custody

A witness wrote on social media: "I’ve never seen so many police cars. Seven in total, all in emergency mode with sirens and blue lights travelling at high speed in convoy along the A5 past the old Rising Sun pub near Brownhills heading towards Cannock this afternoon at around 3pm.

"I had to stop and pull well over to let them past. An eighth police car came speeding past me a few minutes later. It must have been pretty important."

Cannock Police took to social media to share details of the joint-force operation. The post read: "Earlier this afternoon, roads policing officers from Derbyshire Constabulary commenced a pursuit with this vehicle after it almost collided with both police officers and members of the public on their patch.

"The same vehicle had also failed to stop previously in Lichfield. The pursuit eventually came to a safe conclusion in Norton Canes after both our Roads Policing Team and Derbyshire's used tactical contact to forcefully stop the vehicle. One in custody."

When one follower questioned if there had been damage to a police vehicle as a result, the team replied: "Yes, sadly. But the safest way to conclude the pursuit on this occasion given the risk to the public."

When it was queried whether stingers could have been used instead, the force responded: "We have plenty of stingers, however they're not always the most appropriate."
