Exactly when temperature plunging to -2C as West Midlands caught up in cold snap

The Met Office and MetDesk both say Sunday will bring a dusting of snow to parts of the UK - with maps showing where the white stuff is forecast to fall and when

Temperatures are predicted to drop below freezing, with a light dusting of snow expected on higher ground further north in the UK this weekend. Birmingham has seen freezing conditions this morning, and they are set to get colder.

Weather maps highlight the small regions likely to experience a layer of snow by approximately 6am on Sunday, including the Scottish Highlands and parts of the Lake District. Higher terrain will be susceptible to wintry conditions, with temperatures in these areas anticipated to plummet to as low as -2 on Sunday morning.

The decrease in temperatures is largely attributed to an icy northerly wind, which will bring colder Arctic air down. However, forecasters predict that a new Jetstream arriving later next week will abruptly end the cold snap.

By Thursday, temperatures could reach 20C in Norfolk.

Sunday's chill, however, will result in light snow flurries across the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District and the Outer Hebrides. Disruption is unlikely though, reports the Mirror.

It'll be chilly across the UK on Sunday with Birmingham expecting 3C at 6am, and London forecasting 5C. As the day advances, it will warm up slightly - to around 8C in Birmingham and 10C in London.

The temperature should reach 7C in Belfast and 11C in Bristol by the afternoon.

Rain is expected to sweep in from the west, making landfall across Northern Ireland by approximately 4pm. It'll then move westward, reaching parts of Scotland by around 7pm.

Merseyside and the surrounding area can expect showers throughout Sunday evening.

The Met Office has forecast: "Sunday and Monday should remain bright for most, though a few showers are possible."

Looking further ahead, from Tuesday October 15 to Thursday October 24, it predicts: "With winds from a southerly direction at first, temperatures will likely trend above average, with some warm conditions possible at times, but perhaps returning closer to average later in the week as winds become turn more toward the west."

Met Office forecast for West Midlands:

Today:

After a cold and frosty start, it will be a dry day on Friday with variable cloud and sunny spells. Staying rather chilly but with light winds throughout the day. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Dry and largely clear through the evening. Cloud will build for many overnight, with some showers possible later. Turning cold once again. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Saturday:

A dry and bright morning for most once any isolated showers clear. Turning cloudier and breezier through the afternoon as a band of showery rain clears southwards. Maximum temperature 14 °C.
