HERRIMAN — One man was arrested following a report of shots being fired and a car crash at an apartment complex in Herriman late Sunday.

Investigators say they have had to sort through conflicting information given by people detained in the incident. "However, we do believe this incident to be gang-related," Herriman police stated Monday afternoon while noting their investigation was still on-going.

Police were called to the area of 5600 W. Roe Deer Lane (11800 South) about 11:30 p.m. Sunday "on a report of shots fired in the apartment complex parking lot. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle crashed into a fence by the pool," according to a police booking affidavit.

Officers reported locating three shell casings and one live round in the parking lot.

Shortly after police arrived at the scene, they were approached by a man and woman who claimed they were in the vehicle that crashed. They also said they had been shot at by people in a white car.

"Officers asked the male and female if anyone else was in the vehicle with them. They identified a male, Alejandro Palmar Romero, as being in the vehicle with them," the affidavit says.

Witnesses told officers about a man seen running from the area. Police located the man and identified him as Romero.

About the same time, police received a report of a man in Riverton who was "shot with a BB gun," and his car was damaged. When officers located that vehicle, however, they "found multiple bullet holes" in the vehicle. A man who was a passenger in that vehicle had an injured shoulder, "which appeared to be shrapnel from the shots fired into the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Police say the injuries to that man are not life-threatening.

Both the Riverton driver and the passenger identified Romero by name and description as the individual who had shot at them, the affidavit alleges.

Romero, 19, was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, three counts of discharge of a firearm and being a restricted person in possession of a firearm.

Anyone who has additional information on the shooting can call Herriman police at 801-840-4000.
