Man ‘boxed’ his own son in the face — claim heard in Kildare court

A father has been accused of 'boxing' his son in the face.

The accusation was heard at Naas District Court on Thursday, September 12 last.

Gardaí indicated to Judge Desmond Zaidan that the Director of Public Prosecutions indicated that the case should be dealt with via summary disposal.

Garda Sergeant David Hanrahan told Judge Zaidan that the man allegedly 'boxed' his son in the face.

The son allegedly sustained a cut to his mouth as a result of the alleged assault, in addition to allegedly sustaining bruising and swelling.

The defendant appeared before the court via video-link as he is currently in custody.

After hearing the details of the accusations, the judge said that he would accept jurisdiction over the case.

The accused’s defending solicitor, Brian Larkin, told the court that his client was due to have a High Court Bail application heard soon.

'MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE'

Mr Larkin also told the judge: "There is a mental health issue involved in this case; I will be seeking a [psychiatric] report for my client."

Judge Zaidan adjourned the case to a later date in September and marked the case for progress.

He remanded the defendant in custody until the case resumes.
