Driver stopped at traffic lights has car hijacked by man brandishing knife

Gardaí say they arrested a man nearby after the terrifying incident on the Belgard Road in Dublin

Gardaí have arrested a man following a hijacking incident in Dublin, during which a driver was threatened with a knife.

The terrifying incident happened on the Belgard Road, Dublin 24, in the early hours of Friday morning, October 18.

At approximately 2:45am, a man was stopped in his car at traffic lights in the Clondalkin area when he was approached by another man brandishing a knife.

"This man entered the vehicle and forced the driver to drive to another location. The driver subsequently made his escape from the car and reported the incident to Gardaí," a Garda statement confirmed.

"Gardaí located the car unoccupied and the suspect, a man aged in his 30s, was arrested nearby," they added.

The man is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 in a Garda Station in West Dublin.

Investigations are ongoing.

An Garda Síochána is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward.

Any person who was travelling on the Belgard Road or the Clondalkin area this morning between 2am and 3am is asked to contact investigating Gardaí.

Additionally, road users or pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
