Brits have been alerted to a lesser-known warning sign of cardiovascular disease following Jeremy Clarkson revealed he underwent urgent heart surgery. The 64-year-old presenter said he was "days away" from death.

Writing in The Times, the Grand Tour host detailed his experience while on holiday where he encountered several troubling symptoms. His decision to seek medical attention came after learning about Alex Salmond's sudden death on October 12.

He also spoke of needing support after rising from the breakfast table, having difficulty diving and swimming, and problems walking down stairs without assistance. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has indicated that swollen ankles can also be a key indicator of cardiovascular issues, reports Surrey Live.

Swollen ankles are not uncommon and can be attributed to a variety of causes, including the use of blood pressure medication, which might lead to them being easily dismissed. "However, that does not mean you should ignore them, especially if your ankles get very big, as this can be a marker of heart failure," warns the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

"This means that your heart may not be pumping blood around your body as well as it should be and fluid collects in your lower limbs. So, if you're getting swollen ankles, it's worth making an appointment with your GP."

Other warning signs of heart disease as listed by the BHF include:

  • Chest pain
  • Stomach pain like indigestion
  • Arm, jaw or back pain
  • Feeling sweaty
  • Choking feeling
  • Feeling sick
  • Leg pain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Palpitations.
