Liverpool 'join' Man City in transfer pursuit as Gary Neville claim dismissed

Liverpool's attention quickly turned to Crystal Palace on Saturday (12:30pm kick-off) as they look to go into the October international break top of the Premier League. The Reds ran out 2-0 winners over Bologna in the Champions League on Wednesday but their triumph wasn't without scares as the Serie A side threatened.

The triumph took them among the select few teams with an 100 percent record in the new-look elite European competition as the league structure begins to take shape. Liverpool have lost just once since new head coach Arne Slot took over, coming in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, and they will be looking to maintain their place at the top-flight summit with a host of difficult games coming up.

Following the encounter at Selhurst Park and the subsequent break for international football, Liverpool face Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal and a double-header with Brighton & Hove Albion in a gruelling October to the start of November.

With the football fixture list piling up and Liverpool looking to stake their claim as Champions League contenders, as well as title challengers, the Liverpool Echo takes a look at the latest news and rumours circulating the club.

Liverpool rival Man City on scouting mission

Liverpool and Manchester City scouts cast their nets to Gelsenkirchen, Germany to watch 22-year-old Georgiy Sudakov.

According to TBR Football, the English clubs were in attendance to watch the Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk suffer a 3-0 defeat to Atalanta at the home of Schalke 04. It has been said that Liverpool could be eyeing the playmaker as they look to reinforce their attacking midfield options, despite the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai and emergence of Trey Nyoni.

Both teams are said to be monitoring his progress, who was among the standout performers for Ukraine during the summer European Championships. The report adds that Shakhtar are likely to be looking for a significant investment in order to land the academy product.

Nedum Onuoha disagrees with Gary Neville

Following Liverpool's 2-1 win over Wolves, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville dismissed the Reds' title challenge.

Jurgen Klopp led the Anfield club to third in the Premier League, a marked improvement on a campaign earlier, as they staged a surprise title race before fading away with City and Arsenal taking centre stage.

"They're going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football. I didn't feel like I was watching title winners [at Wolves] being honest with you," said Neville. "They're well below Arsenal and City, but I don't think that's shocking anybody."

One former player who disagreed with Neville is Onuoha, who has went as far to say Liverpool are better in one area than both of their title rivals.

He said: "Talent-wise, they’re as good as City and Arsenal in my opinion and their start has been really impressive.

"But that’s more so because we didn’t know what they would look like with their new manager. We now see familiar faces shining and it feels like something we’ve felt before.

"I imagine most people are just wary of overreacting but I imagine they’ll be there or thereabouts when trophies are being played for come the end of the season, with continued good health of that talented squad they have."
