Gavin and Stacey star Alison Steadman has detailed her feelings of 'dread' now the BBC sitcom has finished filming.

The BBC show will air a final Christmas special later this year, with Ruth Jones and James Corden amongst others bidding farewell to their characters one final time. Fans have been anticipating the finale, but it has yet to be revealed how it will all end.

As filming wraps on the show, Alison reflected on her time on the show - and how she was in tears during the final scenes.

She said: "We've had a great five weeks. We only finished on Monday night but we were all dreading that final scene when we finished. 90% of us were in tears. Some people braved it but it's been so fantastic.

"We had a wrap party. It was very nice, it was lovely. We'll just miss not filming it anymore. It was fabulous."

Alison heaped praise on James and Ruth - who play Smithy and Nessa - for their "witty" scripts, as she shared how she had always dreamed of taking on the role as soon as she first saw the script.

"James and Ruth together, they are amazing, their scripts. So witty and funny! When I read the first scene, I was like, I've got to do this. I couldn't wait. I was going through the script and they didn't let me down!" she said.

When they wrapped filming in Dinas Powys - which is where Pam and Mick's Essex home is really based - James spoke to fans and thanked them for their support.

He told them: "Today is our last day in 'Essex'. Everyone in Dinas Powys has been so great to the show so thank you very, very much. It means more to us than you will ever know and we hope that you like the show."

Ruth added: "Thanks so much for being such dedicated fans and for being here every day and watching us even though we were there hid in the house. We hope that you will enjoy our little episode on Christmas Day."

The official Twitter account for the BBC announced that Gavin and Stacey had wrapped filming earlier this week. Alongside a picture of the clapperboard, they wrote: "And that's a wrap... for the last time ever. See you on Christmas Day! #GavinAndStacey." (sic)
