Strictly Come Dancing fans were convinced Wynne Evans and Katya Jones 'hated' each other after an awkward moment.

The duo had to issue an apology after a supposed "inside joke" misfired. A clip showing Wynne placing his hand on Katya's waist, which she attempted to push away only for him to repeat the action, spread like wildfire across social media platforms, sparking concern among viewers.

Subsequently, Wynne and Katya came forward with an apology, with Katya clarifying: "I have to make this absolutely clear, that this whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke, yes, was it a bad joke, yes."

In the aftermath of the eventful weekend, Wynne confessed to being "heartbroken" over the negative reaction the joke received.

He said: "I'm absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day. It's not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we're really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke. It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK? We thought it was funny. It wasn't funny. It has been totally misinterpreted."

Tonight marked their anticipated comeback to the dancefloor, as they quickstepped to Electric Light Orchestra's 'Mr Blue Sky' - their first live performance since the controversy erupted last week. Although they featured in the Sunday show, which was pre-recorded, this evening constituted their live return post the claims of Katya looking "uncomfortable" - a notion she has refuted.

Wynne and Katya didn't address the scandal

Before their live performance to 'Mr Blue Sky' on tonight's programme, Wynne and Katya were presented in a video segment that left the audience feeling uneasy. One viewer commented: "Wins the award for the most awkward VT #strictly."

Another shared their opinion, writing: Wynne definitely lost some of his vibrancy in that VT #strictly." A third penned: "Make the VT like you don't hate each other #strictly," and yet another remarked: "this vt is far too much, VERY unnatural #strictly." A different fan chimed in with: "WHOLESOME NON CONTROVERSIAL VT INCOMING #scd #strictly."
