Rasmus Hojlund found himself discussing Ruud van Nistelrooy's talents as a coach at Manchester United, amid speculation that he could step in to replace Erik ten Hag should he be dismissed.

The former PSV Eindhoven manager - who returned to Old Trafford this summer to join fellow Dutchman Ten Hag's staff - has been mentioned as a potential interim solution for the Red Devils in recent weeks with United having struggled for form.

While Ten Hag's position appears precarious, it remains secure for now following 21-year-old Hojlund's maiden Premier League goal, which turned out to be the winner in United's crucial 2-1 victory over Brentford on Saturday (October 19). This marked United's first league win since September.

Ethan Pinnock had initially given Thomas Frank's team the lead with a stunning header shortly before half-time, but Alejandro Garnacho equalised after the break.

A delightful chip from Hojlund over Mats Flekken clinched a vital three points and drew parallels to Van Nistelrooy's poacher-like instincts, courtesy of his exquisite goal.

Nevertheless, the Danish forward was quick to distance himself from such comparisons to the legendary goalscorer, highlighting instead Van Nistelrooy's mentoring influence. He said: "A Van Nistelrooy finish? I don't want to be compared to him. If you want to talk about him, he is a role model for us. I can develop a lot alongside him."

Hojlund, the club's top scorer in his debut season in Manchester with 16 goals across all competitions last season, is benefiting from the mentorship of Old Trafford legend Van Nistelrooy, heaping praise on the ex-forward's guidance, reports the Mirror.

"Working very close with Ruud van Nistelrooy is a big step for me," acknowledged Hojlund. "He is doing a great job. I'm trying to bring everything I can every time I step on the pitch, especially here at Old Trafford."

The Daily Star recently reported that Van Nistelrooy would be a favourite among United players for the managerial role if Ten Hag's tenure comes to an end. Should Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos consider a managerial change, the players would seemingly advocate for Van Nistelrooy to step in, be it temporarily or permanently.

The 48-year-old is not only a popular figure within the team but also amongst the faithful United supporters. It is thought the former Premier League champion would also be open to accepting the mantle of leadership should Ten Hag part ways with the club.

In terms of other managerial candidates, Thomas Tuchel is now off the table, as The FA have secured the German as England's new head coach. In addition, another potential candidate – recently departed Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate – has expressed his desire for an extended break from management.

Brentford's boss Frank, on the other hand, lost what could be seen as a chance to audition for the job, although his team were unfortunate not to secure a point at Old Trafford.
